Finding the right dance schools

By Sarah Wilkiamson

So how do you find the right dance school for your children? It's an important choice because they're young and, of course, you love them very much. You don't want to trust this sort of thing to just anyone, do you?

Word of mouth: consulting friends can often be a good way to find dance schools. You can often find some out of the way schools like this. Recommendations are always useful, but bear in mind that what has worked for your friend's child might not necessarily work for your child. Even if a school comes highly recommended you should still check it out.

The internet can be a real trap sometimes. However, if you know the tricks to avoid it becomes a great tool. Google is just one of many search engines, but it is the most popular. Searching for something like "dance school" or "dance lessons" can give ambiguous results, so try to include your area so the search can be refined. Sometimes the search results will lead you to articles which have their own advertisements enclosed on the web page. The benefit of the internet is that you can spend a few hours investigating options without having to drive anywhere or speak to anyone. The answer to a query is just an email away.

Yellow pages: You can also find dance schools in the yellow pages, either online or from the phone book. This is not quite so quick as the Internet but you will still find a few. Sometimes you can find dance schools that are not so well known by looking in this way, but nevertheless are still good institutions. They usually cost a little less if they are not so famous, which might be a factor if money is a little tight. Sometimes the teachers are also less well known but can still be very suitable for your child.

Another aspect of the internet is the presence of forums and discussion boards. The things are basically there for people to put up a question or topic and seek answers. Many people frequent these types of sites but responses can take a long time to come back. Needless to say, if you have a little time to evaluate your choice, why not try a message board or forum.

Different styles of dance: sometimes you will find that your child has a certain aptitude or preference for a particular dance discipline. Ballet and tap are two common choices. In this case your search will be narrowed to dance schools that specialize in these particular dance styles. This might be slightly more difficult but the time you spend on researching the dance schools will be well worth it.

Finally, don't forget to look into the credentials of the teachers. Many schools use their own pupils to teach the younger classes and this isn't the best practice. Quality teaches with a lot of experience are always the best option for young children. They need an environment that is conducive to learning and a class that isn't over crowded. - 15995
